The farming town of Grecia in Alajuela province is surrounded by sugar cane, coffee and pineapple which is grown and harvested here. Grecia has the distinction of being one of the cleanest towns in Costa Rica. It is located about an hour from San Jose, 30 minutes from Alajela. See map.

Grecia is a friendly town and residents welcome visitors into their homes as well as their town. It has a wonderful climate that is fresh and breezy, keeping the weather cool most of the year. This area is a great place to explore with its green and unspoiled environment.

1897 Church:

This town's unique metal church, which is a dark rusty red color makes the town a popular tourist destination. The Cathedral de la Mercedes is a gothic style church made from metal pieces that were imported from Belgium in 1897 and reassembled here. This church is as beautiful from the inside as it is impressive from the outside.

There is a Regional Museum, an insect and butterfly museum with over 50,000 different insects and butterflies, and the "World of Snakes" serpentarium, which houses more than 50 species of snakes from all over the world. This snake habitat is a great place to observe these amazing reptiles in their natural environment.
