Wild-Rider 3-Day Guided Action Tour #8

Printer-Friendly Format

3 Day - Northwest Action Tour

Day 1:

After breakfast, we'll depart for our day's target, the Arenal Lake and the majestic, still active, Arenal Volcano. After a short ride on the famous Pan-American Highway, we go onto smaller, paved roads and ride through sugarcane and coffee plantations to the beautiful little town of Naranjo.

The road winds up many narrow curves to the town of Zarcero, where we visit the town-church with its park and many unusual plant sculptures. Then on to our hotel for the night, the Arenal Vista Lodge. This lodge offers a great view over the Arenal Lake. You can also see the majestic Arenal Volcano from your room. If weather permits, you will be able to watch the red lava flow and even witness some of the frequent eruptions of the volcano.

After checking into the hotel we'll go on an excursion to the Arenal Volcano National Park, where we can see the volcanic activity up close and personal. After dinner at our hotel, we'll go for a night-ride to a Volcanic Hot Springs. There, with the majestic backdrop of the volcano, you can take a bath in the hot natural springs and hear the eruptions of the volcano and see the red lava flow (if weather permits). A ride back to the hotel ends our long day.

Day 2:

First breakfast, then we head westbound following a small, paved road that takes us on a scenic ride around the Arenal Lake, until we reach the town of Tilarán. From Tilarán to Miramar, the day's final destination, approximately 50km south, we can take several routes, ranging from well maintained paved roads (including a ride on the famous Pan-American Highway) to technically demanding gravel roads.

Miramar is a small village located in the Alberto Manuel Brénes Cloud Forest and in the same mountain range and altitude (1.500m) as the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Our hotel for the night, the Hotel Vista Golfo, is located on its own spectacular private reserve which comprises 27 hectares of cloud forest, lush jungle, rivers and waterfalls. From the hotels' terrace, we will enjoy a breathtaking view over the Pacific Coast and the Nicoya Gulf and Peninsula.

After relaxing in the hotel's own swimming pool, we can take a hike along the trails of the park, where we will discover many plants, flowers, a large number of different birds, as well as all kinds of other wild animals (monkeys, iguanas, tapir etc.). Watching the sunset and having a nice dinner afterwards will end our day.

Day 3:

The day starts with a typical Costa Rican highlight, a wild Canopy ride through the cloud forest that surrounds the hotel. Attached to a steel robe (there are 11 cables running from tree-top to tree-top, including one of the world's longest, single Canopy cable with a length of 700m), you will slide through the "roof" of the cloud forest, enjoying views, that no other way of traveling can offer.

After a good lunch we get back onto our bikes and return to San José. For this, we can take several routes. Either paved roads or, alternatively, scenic gravel trails winding along a mountain rim for a large part of the distance. We get back to San Jose in the late afternoon.
