Wild-Rider One-Day Guided Tour #5

Printer-Friendly Format

Poas Volcano & La Paz Waterfalls

If you have some street-riding skills and would like to take a scenic tour around San José, then to the peak of the Poas Volcano and finally visit the beautiful La Paz Waterfall Gardens, this Adventure is for you!

Because clouds build in the mountains each afternoon, we'll need to start this tour very early in the morning. We depart San José bright and early via the famous Pan Americana Highway, and pass the town of Alajuela where we'll turn onto smaller roads that wind their way through large coffee and flower plantations. As we climb the 2.704m high volcano, riders are treated to beautiful views of the Valle Central (Central Valley) and San José.

We have to leave our bikes behind and walk the final 500m to the edge of the volcano's majestic crater. Sulfate fumes, escaping from the steaming crater, permeate the air and, on clear days, you can see the green lagoon deep down in its center.

We go back to our bikes and after a short ride, stop at a small restaurant for coffee. From there, we ride for about an hour over smaller asphalt roads to our next destination, lunch at the wonderful Waterfall Gardens of La Paz.

5 magnificent waterfalls surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty make up the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Four kilometers of paved trails lead us to several viewing platforms situated at or behind the waterfalls. Also located at the falls is the the largest enclosed butterfly observatory in the world along with a Hummingbird Garden and the Orchid Garden.

We return to San José, via a different scenic route.
