Wild Rider One-Day Guided Tour #4

Printer-Friendly Format

Off-road to the Pacific Beaches.

This tour requires good On- and Off-road skills, as well as stamina on the motorcycle because we will be riding 10-11 hours and logging close to 200 miles. We'll ride from San José over the western mountain range all the way down to the Pacific Coast and back.

It's kickstands up at 7 A.M as we head west from San José on one of Costa Rica's major highways. After approx. 15 km we pass the picturesque town of Ciudad Colón. Right after the city limits, we exit the highway onto a well maintained asphalt road and begin to climb a mountain range. For the next 20 km, the road winds through the mountains, providing riders with breathtaking views of the Central Valley, rimmed with volcanoes on one side and majestic mountains on the other. At the highest elevation of our trip, we pass the town of Puriscal, located on a mountain rim at an altitude of approx. 5,000ft.

After Puriscal, the road changes from asphalt to gravel as we begin our descent down to the Pacific Coast. It is at this point that several routes to the ocean are available depending on rider's skill level. But even if we take the "easy" route, some Off-road skills are required as some stages are fairly steep while others can get really muddy as we will pass through many different vegetation zones, from the windy mountain range down to the hot jungles that line the coast.

By lunchtime, we should reach the tiny village of Playa Bandera, which consists of only a few houses and its own 10-mile beach. The trail into town winds through a huge labyrinth of palm-plantations, and there are hardly ever any tourists. We'll enjoy the fresh catch of the day at a typical seafront restaurant and then head off to ride this spectacular deserted Pacific Beach.

Around 2 PM we will start our return to San José. We ride northbound along the Pacific Coast passing the town of Jaco, our destination, the famous Tarcoles River, home to Costa Rica's largest wild crocodile colony.

Shortly afterwards, the winding road provides a treat for curve-lovers as it takes us back up the mountains. Our final rest stop is a cozy coffee shop providing riders with one last scenic view over the Pacific Coastline before we finally return to San José at around 6 P.M.
